(13 Sep 2016) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4054856 LEAD IN: Local chocolate makers in Ivory Coast are urging cocoa farmers to make chocolate from their raw cocoa beans rather than just export them. Ivory Coast in the world's leading cocoa producer. But less than a third of these goods are turned into finished products locally, with no locally-made recognised chocolate. STORY-LINE: Long known for its raw cocoa production, Ivory Coast is the land of chocolate - with an estimated 35 percent of cocoa worldwide coming from Ivorian plantations. But it seems few people here actually eat much chocolate. Olga Yenou is one of a handful of local chocolate makers who hopes to change that and claim her place on the market with her 100 percent Ivorian chocolate products. Yenou used to work for the French chocolate manufacturer Cemoi. She set out four years ago on her chocolate making venture, opening the Tafissa chocolate shop in Abidjan. "Our duty is to add value to the cocoa of Ivory Coast. First by transforming cocoa here with the quality it requires, and then to make Ivorians appreciate it and to export it," she says. But Yenou knows this won't be an easy task. She says many people in Ivory Coast view chocolate as a sweet treat. She wants to highlight the healthy qualities of cocoa. "Cocoa is good for the heart. Cocoa is good for the nervous system. It's good when used against stress, against fatigue, and it will be a shame to consider cocoa just like a candy. We are going to work to develop products that we can consume with the same pleasure and without remorse, to have pleasure and well-being. That's what we would like to do with cocoa." Recent billboards sponsored by the country's national Coffee and Cocoa Council have sprung up throughout the economic capital of Abidjan encouraging the consumption of Ivorian chocolate. President Alassane Ouattara has also said that by 2020 he hopes the country will process at least half of its raw cocoa, up 20 percent from where transformation rates are now. According to Yenou, Tafissa annually transforms more than 4,000,000 tons of cocoa beans from the country's southwest "cocoa belt" region into 400 tons of finished products ranging from her all-Ivorian cocoa and cashew spread to her cocoa powder drink mix. Yenou is not alone in this undertaking. Entrepreneurs like Axel Emmanuel, founder of Instant Chocolate says it shouldn't be difficult to convince locals to begin making chocolate because there are cocoa plantations seemingly within every family. Beans from Ivory Coast are usually sun-dried and exported raw. With all of Africa's agricultural resources, the true earnings come from transformation, whether cocoa, coffee or mango, says Emmanuel. "Across all Ivorians, here in Ivory Coast and across the diaspora, you will never have a family who doesn't have a plantation or a parent that doesn't have a cocoa plantation. Whether it's (Didier) Drogba, a big Ivorian, or even the smallest, everyone always has an uncle, or parent that has a cocoa plantation. Whether it's coffee, if it's cocoa, you have to transform it." Tucked away in a small two-level office space in the Cocody neighbourhood in Abidjan, Emmanuel's office also serves as his showroom and packaging facility. Chocolate is considered a luxury in places like Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria where 70 percent of the world's cocoa beans originate. Emmanuel says in countries like Ivory Coast, that recorded a 10.3% economic growth last year, more and more people are able to afford these sweet treats. "In Africa, there is the emerging middle class with the economic growth rates of these countries which are steadily rising right now. This emerging class can buy chocolate for themselves."

Souleymane AGNE is a Horticultural Technician. In 2016, he ventured into the production of organic strawberries through his enterprise, BIO-AGRIPÔLES. Strawberry production is not common in Senegal. And after doing a trial, Souleymane saw that it was possible to grow this fruit in the country. In 2016, he decided to venture into strawberry production and his innovation was to have a strawberry that is sweet. “It was not only to produce strawberry, but also sweet strawberries, which goes beyond production. It was also to show that it is possible to market them here in Senegal, and therefore compete with imported strawberries,” says Souleymane.
